![]() ![]() Perception of a sound can be thought of as the brain receiving the “data” from the ear, whereas detection of a sound can be thought of as the early part of conscious awareness. ![]() When learning to hear, either as a child, or as an adult, these stages will develop. The diagram below shows the “stages” which have to occur for the complete auditory process of hearing a sound. The therapy associated with this choice would be about adapting the auditory brain’s old way of recognising sound, to a new way of recognising the sounds being heard. A simplistic example would be an adult or older child who loses their hearing later in life, and chooses a cochlear implant. On the other hand, Auditory Re-habilitation refers to the process of re-learning to hear. For those who chose sign language as their communication and language choice, there will be associated milestones for visual language. For a child with significant hearing loss, fully reaching these auditory milestones on time for their age, is most likely going require some form of intervention – be that therapy, audiological or medical. For example the startle reflex is an infant of a few months age’s startle response to a loud sound and is part of the auditory milestones for that age, which make up the overall developmental milestone. Auditory Habilitation and Auditory Re-habilitation.Īuditory habilitation is the term for specific training or therapy to supplement learning to hear for the first time – such as a child going through the development milestones associated with hearing (auditory milestones ). When it comes to learning or re-learning to hear, such as after receiving a cochlear implant, there are two terms to consider.
